Enjoy Fresh, Clean, and Hydrated Skin with a Quality Men’s Body Wash

Instead of using ordinary hand soap that can dry your skin out, a men’s body wash is specifically designed for a man’s skin which is thicker, coarser, oilier, and more porous than a woman’s skin. A quality body wash effectively removes dirt, grime, nasty odors, restores moisture for all-day hydration, smooths skin, and refreshes you with a pleasant fragrance.

How to Choose the Best Men’s Body Wash

Know your Skin Type

We all have different types of skin; normal, dry, oily, combination, or aged skin which require a different level of cleaning and moisturizing. If you just pick a body wash that is based on the brand name or on the signature scent, your skin may experience excessive oiliness, dryness, redness, or even a severe allergic reaction.

Once you learn what your unique skin type is, you will be in a better position to choose a body wash that is perfectly matched to your skin.

Single-Use, Dual Purpose, or Multipurpose Men’s Body Wash

Single-use body washes are designed as just a cleanser and moisturizer like the Old Spice Dry Skin Defense. A dual-purpose body wash, like the Rugged & Dapper Body Wash, can be used as body wash and a shampoo. For a full body clean, a multipurpose body wash like the Nivea 3-in-1 Body Wash can be used as a body wash, a shampoo, and a shaving gel.

Synthetic Men’s Body Wash

There has been a lot of backlash against harsh chemicals in our skin and hair care products, so skin care manufacturers are trying to remove as many nasty chemicals as possible. Synthetically-based men’s body washes that contain chemicals are very effective at cleaning but they can strip the skin’s natural oils and cause flaking, redness, and dry, scaly skin.

Avoid Harsh Chemicals

You should always try to avoid using artificial synthetically-based cleaners, fragrances, and colors, especially if you have sensitive skin.

Parabens, phthalates, colorants, mineral oil, petrolatum, and synthetic fragrances and dyes have been linked to potential health concerns. These synthetic ingredients can cause skin and eye irritations, hair loss, kidneys and liver problems, even some cancers.

In particular, you should avoid SLS ( sodium lauryl sulfate) which is a common emulsifier and foaming agent. Even though SLS has been originally derived from coconut, it becomes toxic when other chemicals are added to it. The FDA says that it is safe to use SLS in very small amounts, but it is best to avoid using it, especially if you have sensitive skin.

Some natural body washes, like Jack Black Turbo Wash Energizing Cleanser use Cocamidopropyl Betaine, which is a coconut-derived surfactant, but it provides gentle sulfate-free cleansing.

If you do not suffer from sensitive skin or other skin problems like psoriasis, well-known brands like Nivea or Old Spice are a good compromise. Their body washes contain some natural ingredients and any chemicals may have been tested by dermatologists.

Read the Ingredients List

If you are concerned with chemicals in your body wash, read the ingredient list on the back of the packaging or visit the company’s website. You can also familiarize yourself right now with some great information about potentially toxic chemicals.

Super Healing Natural Ingredients

Natural men’s body washes, like Burt’s Bees Body Wash or Brickell Men’s Products Invigorating Mint Body Wash, contain organically derived ingredients. These power-packed ingredients are effective at cleaning and moisturizing your skin and are 100% safe to use. Natural body washes, like natural shampoo, contain all different types of plant-based botanicals, vitamins, and essential oils, but here is a short list of these highly beneficial ingredients.

  • Apricot seed oil removes rough, dry skin.
  • Coconut oil is a super healing and antibacterial fighting agent.
  • Eucalyptus is a natural decongestant and has an invigorating scent.
  • Juniper Berry has anti-inflammatory properties and soothes red irritated skin.
  • Rosemary extract fights bacteria on the skin’s surface.

Moisturizing Ability

Whether you have dry skin or not, your skin can still lose essential moisture due to harsh sun and wind, air conditioning, and aging. The best types of ingredients that provide long-lasting hydration are Shea butter, Aloe Vera, Avocado, and Olive Oil.

Essential Oil Fragrances

Essential oils create a beautiful natural fragrance, but some oils can cause skin irritations for people with extra sensitive skin. If the scent is too strong, it can also cause breathing problems for asthma and sinus sufferers.

Lathering Ability

A men’s body wash should have a good viscous texture that lathers up well into a rich, creamy foam. But in saying this, a natural body wash may have a low viscosity liquid that does not create a lot of lather. Also, a body wash should not leave a greasy residue on your skin and it should wash off easily.

Shelf Life

You should also check the shelf life of the product. Using a body wash within its shelf life, use by date or best before date means the product will perform better and stay fresher for longer. Synthetic body washes usually have a longer shelf life. Natural body washes may only have a short shelf life up to 45 days or so.

30 DIY Weihnachtsgirlanden Ideen für preiswerte Weihnachtsdekorationen

Are you looking for a way to save on the cost of decorating for Christmas while still keeping things fun and festive?

Well, you’ve come to the right place. I’m going to share with you some of the internet’s best ideas for a beautiful DIY Christmas garland.

Some ideas are new and fresh while others are perfect for celebrating (and decorating for) a good, old-fashioned Christmas.

Are you ready to see what décor ideas are awaiting your home, family, and Christmas tree this year? Here are your festive DIY Christmas garland options:

1. DIY Garland for Less Than $5

Are you working on a tight budget and afraid you won’t be able to come up with a gorgeous garland idea on the cheap?

Well, this tutorial will help you overcome. All you need is cheap garland, a few evergreen sprigs, and you’re on your way.

2. Music Sheet Paper Garland

Do you have some old sheet music hanging around your house you won’t use? Could you print your sheet music off the internet?

Consider cutting the music into strips and forming a paper chain. It would be beautiful to drape around your Christmas tree this year.

3. Fabric Chain Garland

Chains are a great way to make a garland. They’re also easy enough so children can help you create the DIY Christmas garland.

The idea is to take old scraps of fabric, form them into circles which connect as a chain and drape the finished product wherever your garland is needed.

4. Popcorn Garland

I’m planning on using this as one form of garland on my tree this year. I love the look of the popcorn” and the cranberries together.>

Plus, it seems simple enough to make. This tutorial walks you through the process of stringing popcorn and cranberries together on a piece of thread.

5. Thread Spool and Button Garland

If you have some old spools of thread hanging around your craft room, a few spare buttons, and some material which could pass as Christmas colors, you have everything you need to make this garland.

Basically, you wrap the empty spools in the materials and rotate between spools and buttons on the string holding the garland together. It’s unique and would certainly be eye-catching this holiday season.

6. DIY Snowman Garland on Wire

Do you have a love for snowman decorations? I understand because my parents love to decorate their home with traditional Santa Clause décor.

Well, this snowman garland will be right up your alley if they’re your passion. The snowmen are made from paper beads which is a unique touch.

7. Puzzle Piece Holly Garland

What a great craft for the kids to get involved in this holiday season! Whether you have old puzzles which are in need of a new purpose, or you purchase a few puzzles from the dollar store, the craft should be affordable.

Once you have your supplies, you paint the puzzle pieces green to represent the holly. Finish the garland off with red pom-poms and attach it to string to hang and decorate your home.

8. Nativity Wood Chip Garland

This DIY garland is a creative way to share the story of Jesus through your decorations. It all starts with round wood chips.

From there, you draw different nativity scenes on the wood chips with a permanent marker. The wood chips are hung on twine and displayed as decoration.

9. Crochet Chain Garland

If you like the look of making paper chains, but you want them made of something a little sturdier, give this tutorial a try.

This garland is the perfect idea for those who crochet. You can crochet the chain in different colors to make it resemble a paper chain.

10. Lighted Burlap Garland

My mom made this garland for me last year. I displayed it proudly in my kitchen because it’s a festive way to add some beauty to a room.

But it’s also a simple project to make. My mom said it took her only a couple of hours, and my stepdad even wanted to help create it.

11. Salt Dough Christmas Garland

This is a gorgeous and simple DIY garland to make and decorate with this year. The salt dough is nothing more than flour, salt, and water.

You create the different shapes, hang them from a string, and you have a modern garland which didn’t require much to make.

12. Oversized Holly and Berry Garland

Do you have a stairwell which needs a great deal of attention during the holidays? This is a stunning option to make it the centerpiece of your holiday décor.

What makes this even better is it’s created from stock paper, backdrop paper, and pipe cleaners. There are a written tutorial and a video to walk you through how to make this garland.

13. DIY Dried Fruit Garland

This is such a fun and old-fashioned style of décor. I’m in love with this idea and plan on using it in my own home this year.

You’ll dry” a variety of fruit> and space them out with walnuts in between. It’s an easy and inexpensive way to add color to your home this holiday season.

14. Dried Orange Garland

This garland is a little different than the other fruit garland above. It uses only dried oranges, which offer a brighter color.

However, the spacers for the oranges are cranberries. Cranberries gives even more color to the garland and is a gorgeous way to celebrate the holidays.

15. DIY Merry Christmas Garland

This is a fun DIY Christmas garland to drape across your mantle or even down the front of your Christmas tree. It requires scrapbook paper and stick-on letters.

Once you have the paper cut how you’d like it, you attach the stick-on letters. Run the string through holes you create, and you have an easy and festive DIY garland.

16. Burlap Ribbon Garland

Chains are a traditional way to make homemade Christmas garland and decorate for the holidays. This is another tutorial to create a chain garland.

Instead of using paper (which can be flimsy) they chose to use burlap ribbon. It will allow you to reuse the garland for years to come.

17. Book Page Garland

This is another chain garland option which is too cool not to share with you. Do you have old books you’re no longer using?

Then cut the pages out into strips. Glue the ends together and form a chain of the paper. A great way to deck your halls this holiday season.

18. Wood Bead Garland

Are you going for the farmhouse” look> on your Christmas tree or around your home this holiday season?

Why not use wood to decorate? This tutorial shows you how to make a gorgeous wood garland which is sure to make any home stand out.

19. DIY Ornament Garland

Holiday ornaments can be inexpensive when you purchase the different colored balls. Which is why this garland is not only colorful but should also be inexpensive to create.

You’ll string the ornaments onto a thin ribbon until you have a full ornament garland perfect for covering your front door, to go on your tree, or even wrap around your mailbox.

20. Paint Chip Christmas Garland

What a fun way to utilize free items most stores will give you! Browse through the paint aisle and pick out a color scheme for your DIY Christmas garland.

Bring the paint chips home, follow this tutorial to string them together, and create a beautiful masterpiece.

21. Pinecone and Cranberry Rustic Garland

Do you adore the look of bleached” pinecones>? You’re going to love this rustic garland if you do. It’s a strand of bleached pinecones.

But a splash of color is added with cranberries. It’s perfect to brighten up your mantel or even to add some color to your Christmas tree.

22. Pretty Burlap Garland

I’m into burlap. It’s a durable material and is pretty all by itself. If you’d like to make burlap part of your decoration theme this year, you must check out this tutorial.

They walk you through how to make a simple (but pretty) burlap garland. Decorating any part of your home with it would be beautiful.

23. DIY Button Garland

Do you know how easy it can be to find loose buttons hanging around your home or even to purchase inexpensively?

30 Ideen für geodätische Kuppeln für Gewächshäuser, Hühnerställe, Rettungskapseln und mehr

Now, we all know how cool geodesic domes look, but, did you know they are incredibly advantageous as well? Because of the geometrical shapes within the dome, any structural stress is distributed more equally throughout the structure. Therefore, it’s able to hold substantially heavy loads for its size.

There are lots of different materials you can use to construct a geodesic dome. It can be made using wooden planks with stainless steel band locks often known as hub-and-strut domes. Temporary greenhouses are often built using a light one-inch beam structure and covered by plastic sheeting. Some geodesic domes are constructed out of electrical conduit or lightweight aluminum. Concrete and foam domes exist as well, typically using a steel skeleton.

Although geodesic domes look amazing, they have complications and difficulties to them. However, if you are looking to build one for whatever reason, we suggest you start small! Try your luck out with building a lightweight greenhouse as a beginner project! From there you can work your way up to something more extravagant.

10 Herbst-Homestead-Projekte, die Ihnen einen Vorsprung in die geschäftige Frühjahrssaison verschaffen

Fall is one of the most exciting times of the year on the homestead for me. As the garden winds down and some of the animal routines — like goat” milking> – slow down, new projects heat up.

All the homesteading projects I put on the back burner in the warmer months, because I was too busy with the garden or helping with goat births, comes to the forefront. The cooler weather, the beauty of the changing season, and the thought of the coming cold all spur me into a kind of fevered action.

If you are an experienced homesteader, I bet you know what I mean. If you are new to homesteading, then let me tell you, fall is when you get things done!

Come January and February; you’ll want to be indoors scouring the seed catalog for next” year heirlooms> and otherwise hiding indoors. Now, though is the perfect time to make progress on all those things on your long homesteading projects to-do list.

Fall Projects For Your Homestead

Just in case you need a little inspiration to get started, here are ten homesteading projects that are perfect to start in the fall.

1. Start Your Spring Garden

homestead projects

Fall is the absolute best time of the year to start a new” garden>. Soil” amendments> take time to do their thing.

By testing your soil in the fall and applying amendments at this time of year, you give them time to transform your soil chemistry. Also, by adding a layer of cardboard over your soil, then covering it with compost and mulch, you can suppress weeds and kick-start your soil fertility, so you are ready to plant come early spring.

If you plan to build raised beds or dig mounded beds, the cooler weather also makes those activities more enjoyable and less exhausting. So, get to work on your spring garden now and reap the rewards of your early efforts next year!

2. Build Your Chicken Coop

If you want to have eggs in summer, you need to order chicks for as early as possible in spring. Unless you want to be building your chicken” coop> and run in the middle of winter, fall is the perfect time to start coop construction.

If you start in fall, you can take your time, chipping away at construction a little bit each week. Also, as much of the foliage begins to die back, it makes things like fencing runs or digging in underground fencing for predator protection much easier.

You also get the benefit of seeing how your coop weathers your winter so you can make adjustments, if necessary, before you move chicks arrive.

If chickens aren’t your thing, this is also the perfect time to get ready for pigs, build your rabbit” hutch>, start your duck” shelter>, get” prepared for goats>, or prepare for any” livestock> you dream of keeping.

3. Prepare for Bees

If you want to start raising honey” bees> or add another hive, fall is the perfect time to order your packages. Bee packages (new hive starts), particularly those raised naturally or organically, sell out quickly. Get your order in now for a next spring shipment.

While you are at it, start preparing your bee spaces. Get your hives ready. Apply paint or wood protectant now before it gets too cold, so fumes have plenty of time to dissipate. Bees are sensitive to paint-related Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC).

Also, if you have bee predators like bears, you need to put up your fencing and electric” fencing> to make your space safe for your new hives. Fall is an excellent time to do that.

4. Inoculate Mushroom Logs

As fall inches into winter, the sap flow in trees slows down. This is a perfect time to cut your logs to use for mushroom inoculation.

Also, competitive fungi tend to be less active. So, you’re less likely to get unwanted colonizers moving into your logs.

Once your logs have had a couple of weeks for the terpenes to leach out, then start drilling your holes and inoculate with your preferred mushroom spawn.

Wide-ranging strains of shiitake mushrooms on hardwoods like red oak are one of the easiest ways to get started with mushrooms. If you inoculate in fall, you could even have your first harvest as early as late spring or early summer as long as logs are kept consistently moist.

5. Prepare Perennial Planting Areas

Although fall is one of the best times of the year to plant new trees and perennial plants, if your soil is in poor condition, then you may need to prepare the soil in fall and wait to plant until only in spring or the following fall.

One of the easiest and most beneficial ways to prepare areas for perennial plants like fruit trees, shrubs, herbs, and flowers is to sheet” mulch>. Sheet mulching is much more effective when done in fall because it works with natural cycles to radically improve your soil’s structure.

Particularly if you live in an area with lots of snow, sheet mulching in fall can produce tremendous results with minimal effort. The hard part about sheet mulching is moving all that manure, straw, and wood chips to your new planting location.

In fall, though you can take off your coat, roll up your sleeves and enjoy the pleasure of being outdoors using your muscles. All that manual labor also gets” you in great shape> going into your winter holidays, so you can enjoy a few more treats than you otherwise would!

6. Start Using a Composting Toilet

I am just going to say it – flushing your toilet is a total waste! It’s a waste of precious water, resources in processing it, and potential fertility for your perennial planting zones.

By building and using a simple composting” toilet> which involves a bucket for poo and another full of sawdust and herbs to cover your poo, you can make safe, and easy to use, humanure.

The trick is to age your filled buckets for one year. Then only apply them to the base of plants that will not come in direct contact with food sources. Then you get to turn all that human waste into useful compost.

The potential stink factor and risk of pests are the two things that prevent most people from adding this simple tool to their homestead. Starting to use this in fall, when aromas aren’t as intense and pests are less problematic, is a good way to ease into the idea of using all the natural resources on your homestead!

7. Build a Greenhouse or Cold Frame

If you want to get an early start on your spring growing season, start building your new greenhouse” or putting together your cold frames now. a lot of hardy plants such as arugula and mustard can germinate at temperatures low with just little protection you even get good germination in late winter.>

Depending on your USDA” planting zone>, you may be able to start your spring” garden> as early as February, once you have sufficient day light. Putting your infrastructure in place now, before it gets too cold to work outside can help you get a jump on your food production for next year.

8. Create New Paths

One of the most common mistakes new gardeners or homesteaders make is not leaving themselves proper pathways to get to all their various planting areas. When you don’t have established” paths>, you tend to step on your soil more often than you should which leads to soil compaction and stunted plant production.

In fall, as plants begin to go dormant for the winter, you can see the bones of your homestead better and plan your footpaths to protect the soil. You may need to move a few plants to make room for reasonable” walkways>.

As long as you dig out the entire root ball, and stake plants on the other side, they should come through fall re-planting not much worse for the wear. And in the long run, without you walking across their roots, they’ll thank you for it!

9. Dig a Pond

homestead project

It is easier to dig in the soil heading into fall and winter. As insects make their way further under ground, they soften it up by adding moisture and making space. Also, as annual plants die and their roots shrivel, this also loosens the soil. Now, I am not saying that suddenly deadpan dirt will suddenly cut like butter, but it does make a noticeable difference.

This benefit starts when weedy areas die down and continue through to your first ground freeze. So, if you plan to dig” a pond>, or even something like an underground greenhouse (called a walipini), this is a great time to dig. Cooler temperatures make the labor easier too if you happen to do it by hand as I do!

10. Install Trellises, Arbors, and Pergolas

fall homestead projects

If you are planning to start a vineyard in spring, you need to get your trellises in place before you begin planting. Your grape” vines> will be picky about soil disturbance after planting. Plus vine training starts in year 1. So, installing your posts,” anchors and lines> in fall before the ground freezes gives you a great head start on your spring vineyard.

Also, if want to create arbors around your homestead to support your hops, kiwi, and other vining” edibles>, fall is perfect for that.

If you dream of a vine covered pergola” over your outdoor dining area then get to work now and enjoy beautiful space come spring>

Fall Homestead Projects are Fun!

These ideas are just a sampling of what you can do in fall. Digging your root” cellar>, starting” your plant nursery>, building your outdoor” kitchen>, making all those inspired pallet” projects> you’ve dreamed of, and more are all also tons of fun for fall!

Don’t let the lack of daylight keep you from getting your homesteading projects done. Work hard now so you can have more to enjoy on the homestead come spring and summer!

3 Schritte, um Ihre personalisierten hausgemachten Kräutertees und Aufgüsse zu genießen

Back in my early teens, I discovered the incredible pleasure of “afternoon tea.” Those adorable little sandwiches, the elegance of pouring perfectly steeped tea from a delicate, decorated pot, and the experience of sipping slowly from a small cup made my soul soar.

There is just something so enticing about elevating the ordinary act of having an afternoon snack to the status of a grand affair. Now, as a full-time homesteader, heading out to the Ritz Carlton for the 4:00 pm tea, isn’t quite in my purview. However, I still like to turn my tea times into special events.

I’ve traded frilly, fussy ceramic pots for pottery mugs that fit perfectly in the palms of my hands. In lieu of tiny tea sandwiches, I snack on squares of fresh-baked” sourdough> topped with homestead chevre and pickled” cucumbers>. And my teas are made mostly with herbs” i grew>, dried, and blended myself.

Even if you can’t make it to fancy afternoon tea services, enjoying your own hand-crafted herbal homestead teas is an easy way to add some elegance to your everyday experiences. With just a little bit of effort, you can turn those sweet and savory herbs you’ve got growing in your garden right now into tasty teas and tisanes to savor all winter long.

Teas, Herbal Teas, or Tisanes?

Some sticklers say that “tea” must contain some of the leaves of the plant called Camellia sinensis – an evergreen shrub used to make white, green, and black teas.

Camellia sinensis produces the finest, richest tasting leaves when it is slow-grown at higher elevations. It is only hardy down to 20º F. Though it can grow 10 to 15 feet tall and wide, it is generally pruned to about 3 to 4 feet tall and wide to use for tea leaves.

You can grow Camellia sinensis at home if you live in USDA” hardiness zones> or have a heated” greenhouse> or other warm, sunny location to keep your plants over winter. However, you don’t need to grow your own Camellia sinensis to make your own flavorful blends at home.

Infused beverages made of dried leaves, spices, and other flavoring agents that do not contain Camellia sinensis are technically called “herbal teas” or “tisanes.” These can be just as delicious and comforting without the caffeine.

Or, you can even add other herbs to your plain old white, black, and green teas to make them even tastier!

Make Delicious Tea Blends At Home

teas and infusions

There are several different ways to go about making tea. You can start by growing” your own herbs>. You can steal” them from fellow gardeners> who grow them or buy them fresh at the farmers” market> or grocery store. Or, you can order them pre-dried from suppliers who make herbs for medicinal and edible uses, as well as teas and infusions.

Sometimes I use all three methods. However, for the most part, tea blending starts in the garden for me.

6 Tips For Harvesting Herbs

herbs for homemade tea

Harvesting herbs at their peak flavor, processing swiftly, and storing safely are critical steps for making good blends for your teas and infusions.

Tip 1: Avoid Harvesting in Hot Weather

In hot weather, plants tend to lose some of their essential oils to evaporation or transpiration. They’ll be less aromatic and won’t stay fresh as long when drying.

Harvesting in cooler weather such as spring or fall, when herbs are thriving and have the most color and aroma can bring out the best flavors in your homemade tea blends.

Tip 2: Avoid Harvesting in Extended Wet or Dry Periods

Heavy rain can dilute the flavor of your herbs. Extended dry periods can also cause your flavorful favorites to become more bitter.

Harvesting when your herbs have been well-watered, but not drenched, for several days can dramatically intensify the flavors and aromas of your dried herbs.

Tip 3: Harvest Relative to Flowering

When plants flower, they put most of their energy into bloom production. The leaf and stem maintenance become secondary to flower growth.

Generally, harvesting before plants begin to flower is optimal. Alternatively, you can harvest after blooms have been dead-headed and plants have recovered from flowering.

If you want to make pretty tea blends, then I also recommend harvesting the edible” flowers> of your favorite tea herbs to add to the mix.

Tip 4: Dry Herbs Quickly

The key to capturing the full flavors and aromas of fresh herbs and spices is to dry immediately and quickly after harvest without exposing plants to direct sunlight.  There are lots of ways to achieve this result.

 – Use Your Oven

One of my favorite no-stress ways of doing this is to spread my herbs, flowers, and seeds out on a baking sheet and set them inside my gas oven (without turning it on). Because I have a lit pilot light, the oven runs at around 90º F and has almost no humidity.

– Use a Shady Laundry Line

When the humidity is low outside, and there’s a gentle breeze, I tie my herbs in small bunches and hang them from a laundry” line> under my shaded porch” area>.

– Use a Dehydrator or Oast Box

Using an electric” dehydrator> works well for pungent herbs and seeds that will only be used in small quantities like rosemary or lavender. However, for your main tea herbs, you may be drying quantities that are too large for your standard electric dehydrator.

In that case, using something like the oast boxes designed for drying hops, works well for drying large quantities of herbs in a hurry.

Tip 5: Store Herbs in Air Tight Containers

Check your herbs often as you are drying them. As soon as they are thoroughly dry, crumble them up, and store them in airtight containers. Glass” mason jars> with tight-fitting lids or recycled tea tins work great for this purpose.

Never store dried herbs in direct sunlight.

Tip 6: Skimp on Stem Picking

I hate picking all the dried stems out of my tea herbs. So, I don’t.

I pick out the big obvious stems that are hard to fit in my containers. Otherwise, I am not so picky about just having leaves in my mixes.

If you plan to put your mixes into tea bags instead of just putting them directly in your teapot or using a loose leaf tea strainer, then you may need to get a bit pickier. Otherwise, skimping on the stem picking will save you tons of processing time and make you more likely to dry your herbs for use in teas and infusions.

3 Steps to Make Your Blends

Regardless of whether you grow, free source, or buy your blending herbs, once you have dried herbs, the process for making your own mixes is the same for all these methods.

Step 1: Choose Your Base

tea plants

Tea blends are made by mixing complimentary flavors. For example, a full-bodied black tea seasoned with cinnamon makes for a fabulous wintery pick me up. A peppy peppermint with just a hint of licorice and black pepper can do the same without the caffeine.

Generally, your base herb will make up 50-75% of your blend. Picking the base herb that will contribute the primary flavor and body style to your tea is like preparing your canvas for paint.

We all have different tastes, so your base herb should be tailored to your personal preferences. But, here are some of my favorite base herbs to get you started.

1. Tulsi or Holy Basil

This incredibly easy to grow member of the basil family is one of the absolute best bases to use if you want a caffeine-free tisane that pairs well with milk and honey. It’s also the perfect base for making a spicy chai-style tea.

2. Peppermint or Spearmint

Peppermint or Spearmint are two of the strongest, most” prolific growing mints>. They both make excellent choices as a base for your tea. Sometimes they are even used without any additional flavoring components.

3. Oregano

Many people don’t think of oregano as a tea herb. But it makes a delicious base when paired with other stronger flavors such as licorice or anise or spices like cinnamon or cloves. This prolific producer also adds a lot of dark color and body to an herbal tea mix.

4. White, Green, or Black Tea

Even if you don’t grow your own Camellia sinensis at home, there’s no reason you can’t use purchased plain loose leaf white, green, or black as the flavor base for your homegrown herbs.

In fact, one of the most popular teas on the planet, Earl Grey is made with a black tea base with a hint of bergamot. Caffeinated chai teas, too, are made by starting with Camellia sinensis leaves as the base.

5. Chamomile

Chamomile is a very aromatic but delicately flavored flower that provides more calming benefits and flavor punch when used as the primary portion of a blend recipe. I use both perennial Roman and annual German chamomile for my teas to get a more extended harvest period and increase my production.

6. Lemon Balm

Lemon balm is another prolific member of the mint family that makes a great canvas for other flavors. Despite its strong lemony aroma, when dried and used in tea, the lemony fragrance is more subdued. What comes through flavor-wise is a hint of bitter and a mild minty quality that makes this a good vehicle for a wide variety of other aromas.

Almost any edible herb or plant that you enjoy can be used as a base. Using herbs that are easy to grow and prolifically produce is a great way to cut costs and do less work!

Step 2: Choose Your Flavor Agents

teas and infusions

If your base ingredient is your canvas, the flavor agents are the brush strokes that bring your vision into focus. Just as with painting, you can use whatever colors and flavors you want to make a blend that suits your tastes.

These ingredients will make up roughly 25-50% of your blend, depending on what you chose as a base. In the case of really strongly flavored herbs like lavender, they may only make up 5% of the mix.

Here are some taste groups and herb ideas to consider using in your blends:

1. Licorice

Hints of anise and black licorice are very common in herbal tea blends. There are many different herbs you can use to create this flavor complex.

Licorice root is an obvious choice. But, you can also use true hyssop, anise hyssop, perilla, French tarragon, wormwood, and horehound to bring in that bitter, almost medicinal and candy-like taste we associate with cough drops (and love in our tea).

2. Citrus

Dried orange and lemon zests make great flavoring agents. However, there are many other ways to bring in a bit of citrus even when you can’t grow lemons in your planting zone.

Lemon verbena, bergamot (the herb, not the orange oil), rose hips, hibiscus, lemon thyme, and (my personal favorite) lemongrass all make great citrus substitutes when dried and used in tea blends.

3. Sweet

Particularly for people who don’t plan to add sweetener to their teas, bringing in herbs that convey a fresh taste profile can make for a real treat. Dried” stevia>, pineapple sage flowers, catmint, and sweet mace all give the illusion of sweetness without the glycemic index (or calories).

4. Floral

Floral flavors used to be incredibly popular. They fell out of favor for a while but are making a come back. Some of my personal favorites are violet flowers, rose petals, calendula, and lavender seeds. Dandelion” tea> is becoming a popular favorite.

Some flowers like nasturtiums, hollyhocks, and pansies don’t contribute much by way of flavor. However, they can be dried and added to the mix to add color.

5. Earthy

Earthy flavors are also sometimes referred to as herby. They tend toward the savory spectrum and come through loud and clear in things like rosemary, Italian basil, chives, and cilantro. When used in really small doses and paired with other flavors like floral or licorice, these add complexity and balance to tea blends.

Milder” herbs> like stinging nettle, raspberry or blackberry leaves, or catnip are less pungent and can be used in larger quantities to add earthiness.

6. Spicy

You can use actual spices in your tea blends too. Cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, star anise, coriander, peppercorns, and juniper berries are some of my go-to tea spices.

When using spices, they tend to be heavier than dried herb leaves and settle to the bottom of blends. So, I mostly like to use spices when I am making tea bags. That way I can put small amounts of these flavors in with my blends to ensure the right ratios.

I use round coffee filters as tea bags since they are cheap and easy to find.  The fibers are less porous than official tea bags. So I add a bit more of my tea blend to the coffee filters to ensure the flavors steep well in a cup.

7. “Out There” Flavors

“Out there” flavors isn’t precisely a taste category. It’s more of an invitation to be creative. You can use all sorts of different dried substances in your tea mixes.

For example, I like to use dried mushrooms like shiitake combined with an oregano base and bit of dried cilantro to make a savory winter tea that almost drinks like a broth.

Dried, minced fruits like apples, persimmons, and mangos add an enormous amount of intense flavor. Coconut, cayenne, cacao nibs, and more can all be added to your tea blends to transform them into adventure or dessert teas.

Step 3: Stir, Sample, and Store

storing your tea mix

Once you’ve picked your base and your flavors, the last step is to mix them. I tend to work in big batches, so I use a large wooden bowl to toss my herbs. Then I use my canning collar and my hands or a ladle to transfer my blends to mason jars.

Before I do that though, I like to sample a small cup to make sure I got my blend right. The combinations get better after the herbs have been allowed to meld together in a container for a week or two. However, you can still tell in minutes if it’s going to be good!

Time for Tea

You don’t have to spend a fortune to make beautiful teas and infusions. Just take your time and make mixes that smell, taste, and appeal to you visually. Blending your own teas is almost as much fun as drinking them!

When you have a nice collection of teas to share, invite your best friends over for a pot-luck afternoon tea. Encourage them to bring the finger sandwiches and tiny cookies. Then, you can all enjoy the luxury of a 5-star afternoon tea without the price tag!

23 DIY Kerzenhalter für zusätzlichen wohnlichen Charme und Wärme

Do you ever browse through the home décor stores and consider how cute everything is? Yet, you check your wallet and know you can’t afford to splurge on décor?

I get it! I see many people with gorgeously decorated homes, and I love looking at them, but I can’t bring myself to spend the money.

Which is why I’m grateful for the internet. Trendy people create gorgeous DIY décor items and share them to help people (like me) to decorate their home on a budget.

Therefore, we’re going to explore DIY candle holders. Candles make your home welcoming. Why not make a cute candle holder to accompany it and why spend a fortune on it?

Here are some great ideas for DIY candle holders:

1. DIY Laced Cement Votives

diy candle holders

Do you like having tea lights sitting around your home to add a romantic glow to a room? Well, you’ll love this idea.

It doesn’t require fancy supplies. You’ll need paper cups, popsicle sticks, cement, sticker tape, and a few other items most will have on hand.

2. Frame Lantern

This is such a neat idea! The idea is to put four frames together to create a lantern where you can set a larger candle inside.

It adds a touch of charm to a room, and I love the fact you can purchase the frames from the dollar store and paint them.

3. Table Leg Candle Holders

Do you ever shop at the Pottery Barn? They have amazingly cute décor items. This idea originated from one of their stores.

However, the creator of this idea, decided to use old table legs as candle holders. It’s a unique way to add a little charm to your home for little money.

4. Leaf Mason Jar Candle Holder

This is another adorable and frugal idea to create a candle holder. You use a mason jar as the base for the holder.

From there, use real or fake leaves and Modge Podge. Place the leaves on the jar, and they create a luminary effect.

5. Glass Bead Candle Holder

If you’re working on a budget, you don’t get much cheaper than the dollar store. In this case, you can purchase all of your supplies from there (in most cases.)

This candle holder requires a round vase and a bag of glass beads. The beads are attached to the vase, and you have a pretty display for a candle.

6. Outdoor Terra Cotta Candle Holders

This is a quick and easy project, perfect for displaying your candles outdoors. You need a terra cotta pot and the terra cotter holder which goes beneath the pot.

From there, paint the pot the desired color, super glue the holder to the bottom of the terra cotta pot, and flip it upside down when dried to hold a candle.

7. Cinnamon Stick Candle Holder

Are you looking for a unique way to display your candle which won’t take a long time to create? Well, this is another fast and simple candle holder.

Place cinnamon sticks around a candle. Use a piece of twine to secure the cinnamon sticks to the candle. This is all it takes.

8. Concrete Tea Light Holder

Do you need a centerpiece? Are you looking for something different but also cheap? Well, this could be your answer.

The tutorial walks you through how to fill a butter tub with cement. From there, you create a place to hold three tea lights.

9. Christmas Township Candle Jar

This candle jar looks gorgeous. It appears to require a little more work than some other options shown here.

However, if you’re someone who enjoys a good craft, you’ll like this. You spray snow on the jar, print a picture, cut it out, and attach it to the jar to complete the look.

10. The Rock Candle Holder

rocky diy candle holders

This candle holder will require some creativity on your part because it’s only an image without a tutorial. Obviously, you must begin with a large flat rock and multiple rounder rocks to go around the outside.

The flatter rock will be where the candle is held. You’ll add the eyes to the round rocks and place them around the outside of the candle. It’s a cute idea!

11. DIY Stained Glass Votive Holder

Stained glass doesn’t get old in my eyes. There’s something charming about it. Which is why it doesn’t surprise me how much people love this DIY project.

You use a glass vase and attach cut out pieces of tissue paper using Modge Podge. It creates a unique look and is quite gorgeous to look at.

12. $2 DIY Candle Holders

This is a great idea, and I was quite surprised at how it was put together after reading the tutorial. When first looking at it, you wouldn’t know the candle holder didn’t come this way.

A straight vase has a shorter candlestick holder glued to the base. It begins to look like one piece. You pop your candle inside the holder, and you’re done.

13. Recycled Can Tea Light Holders

This is another easy DIY candle holders project. Save your tin cans when you’ve emptied and cleaned them. Use a drill to create decorative designs on the side of the cans.

From there, spray paint the cans the desired color. Place a unique handle on the can and add the tea light.

14. Large Driftwood Candle Holder

I love rustic décor, and I also love using unique items I find along the way because it means no one will have a duplicate item.

In this case, if you find a piece of drift wood, drill holes along the wood deep enough to hold a tea light. When the holes are deep enough, place the tea light inside the driftwood, and you have a frugal and attractive candle holder.

15. Black Lace Votives

This is another simple idea but is snazzy enough to be used for special occasions. Find cheap candle holders at the dollar store.

Purchase a yard of black lace fabric and wrap the votives in the lace. Secure the lace to the holder with glue.

16. Christmas Wine Glass Candle Holders

This idea looks complicated from afar, but once you get into it, you realize it’s much easier than it seems.

You decorate a wine glass (which would be the hardest part for me), turn it upside down, and place a candle on the base.

17. Outdoor Candle Holder

Do you eat a good amount of tuna? Don’t toss those cans. At least not until you see this idea. Clean a tuna can and paint it.

Place the tuna can on a paint stick, place a cheap hurricane globe over the tuna can, and add a candle. You have a frugal outdoor candle holder.

18. Votive Candle Holder

If you have scrap wood you’d like to put to work, you must check out this neat tutorial. Drill small holes into the scrap wood large enough to hold a small candle.

Once the holes have been drilled, add the candles to the holder. You can stain the wood to give it a more finished look.

19. Taper Candle Holder

This tutorial is similar to the one above. However, it’s meant for larger taper candles. You’ll need a piece of oak wood to drill holes into.

Once the holes are drilled, you plug the candle into the wood. They should fit snuggly in place and work wonderfully as an inexpensive candle holder.

20. Snow Covered Mason Jar Candle Holder

People are extremely creative. Would you ever imagine Epsom salt could look as pretty as it does in this tutorial?

Well, all you must do is coat the jar in Modge Podge and roll it in Epsom salt. It gives the jar a frosted look which can be finished with smaller Christmas décor at the top for a gorgeous candle holder.

21. The Fork Candle Holder

DIY Candle holders

Are you looking for a unique way to add candles as a centerpiece for a special occasion or dinner? Consider this one.

Though there’s no tutorial, the design seems simple enough. Bend forks to where the stems are the support and the spikey part of the fork is used to secure the candle.

22. The Saucer and Teacup Candle Holder

This is an idea which can utilize thrift store finds or old teacups which no longer have the accompanying dinnerware.

You glue the saucer to the bottom of the teacup at each base. Turn the teacup on its top and use the saucer as the support for the candle.

23. Rustic Wood Candle Holder

diy candle holders

Have you recently had to cut down an old tree and aren’t sure what to do with the smaller parts? Well, here’s an idea.

Collect the smaller pieces of wood, drill holes in the centers, and use them as a unique candle holder. It’s a gorgeous idea too!

Well, you now know how to make over 20 different DIY candle holders. They should work on almost any budget and also add a brightness to your home year-round. Read more about homemade” candles> too, for a complete DIY project.

Hopefully these ideas will inspire you to get more creative in your home” d efforts> and be able to utilize items you have on hand to stay within” budget>.

10 inspirierende Herbstaktivitäten auf dem Gehöft, um sich wieder mit der Natur zu verbinden

Homesteading can be a lot of work. Fall is no exception. Sometimes fall can be even busier than spring and summer because it’s a great time to get projects” done.>

I am up at dawn, busy all day long, with never a dull moment in between. Yet, I choose this because even a crazy day on the homestead has its moments of bliss and beauty.

Like watching the multi-colored leaves dancing in the winds and along the various thermoclines until they finally settle on the dark, cool earth and begin their progression towards compost. If we slow down enough to see the magic of fall and enjoy its many splendors, our workloads are lightened and our days have new meaning.

Simple Fall Homestead Activities to Welcome Autumn

Fall offers so many opportunities to reconnect with a simple living mindset and embrace our connectedness with nature. We only have to open ourselves up to the experiences and make the time.

1. Enjoy a Fire

fall homestead activities

Fire is such a primal thing. Whether it is burning in the fire” pit> in our outdoor” living area>, in the fireplace” in our living room or warming up hot tub>, its warmth and vitality are undeniable. Fall is the perfect time for enjoying a fire.

Hanger-cooked hot dogs, burnt marshmallows, or even foil-wrapped oysters or chestnuts over an open flame are great ways to add a little luxury to an everyday fire. These are traditions for a reason because they are simple” and satisfying>.

Burning a sage smudge, or another dried herb bunch, is another way to start and savor a fire even if you don’t have a fire pit or a fireplace of your own.

(Remember to keep a bucket of water nearby just in case.)

2. Drink More Hot Beverages

Many of us are already in the habit of drinking a hot coffee or tea for breakfast. In the fall, though, as your body adjusts to the colder temperatures, instead of turning up the heat in your house, opt for more warm” beverages>.

Cool air, coupled with warm drinks, is one of the most pleasurable experiences. It’s like drinking cool water on a hot day, except the exact opposite!

Fresh apple” cider>, warmed and spiced with cinnamon, makes a great no-caffeine afternoon treat. A glass of vin chaud, gluehwein, mulled wine, or whatever else you want to call it, is a perfect evening addition to enjoy in front of the fire as mentioned earlier.

A hot toddy, a decaf Irish Coffee, or a schnapps spiked hot cocoa are also good go-tos to warm up your weekends! You can even make cordials” and add them to your hot beverages for an extra treat.>

3. Corn Mazes and Homestead Labyrinths

Corn mazes are made by growing corn through summer, then cutting pathways through the dried stalks in fall. It takes a fair amount of planning… and of course a large corn field. Farmers often make them open to the public in fall.

Even if there’s no corn maze near you, you can create something like a maze on your own homestead using whatever materials you have available. Labyrinths are used for meditation and as a kind of rite of passage.

They don’t need to be 8 feet tall and impossibly complex. They need to be created with the right intentions and used as part of a mindful meditation practice. Planning, placement, and use of the labyrinth all contribute to mental well-being.

Stones, garden debris, left over lumber, really anything you’ve got to work with can mark the paths and set the stage to create your own mental” escape at home>. This is a perfect thing to do in fall too as nature quiets and the landscape loses some of its green colors.

A labyrinth can add beauty and purpose to your sleeping landscape. If you use compostable materials to mark your paths, then nature will simply take them back come spring. No clean up necessary!

4. Homestead Soup

Fall root vegetables, cold-weather leafy greens, long-storing onions, and more all make for great” winter soup> ingredients. If you process your own livestock too, then the bones and grisly bits make for” a stock> to add minerals and flavor to your hearty” stews>.

Enjoy the meditative process of harvesting,” cleaning and vegetables> to cook. Inhale the delicious scents as they mix and mingle turning water into a broth. Add dried” and herbs> and spices to enhance the natural flavors.

Soups and stews only require a bowl and spoon to eat. So, curl up with homemade soup in front of a fire or while watching your favorite” movie>. Or, pack it up in a thermos, take a blanket, and go enjoy your soup while basking in the sun on a sublime, cool fall day.

5. Hot Soaks

One of the first things we built on our homestead was a wood-fired hot” tub>. With all the physical work we do, we knew we’d need the healing power of heat to rejuvenate our weary muscles. And we’ve certainly gotten our money’s worth on that project.

You don’t have to have a wood-fired hot tub to enjoy the healing benefits of heat. Hot showers, hot” soaks> in your bath, saunas,” or even steaming facials can all conjure the power of heat to and relax>.

Lingering in the heat is what gives you the benefit. So, pencil in a few extra minutes to let the hot water soak into your pores and recharge your body.

6. Inventory Your Pantry

I know this doesn’t sound relaxing on the surface. But, most of us homesteaders have some level of concern about our ability to provide” for our families> during times of unexpected” hardship>. By organizing and taking inventory of your pantry, you get multiple benefits.

You can identify and stock up on anything you might be missing, so you are ready for whatever” winter brings>. You can celebrate your successes by acknowledging exactly how much work and good food you grew and processed for your family. Plus, you can start planning” your holiday meals> knowing what you’ve got on the shelf, so you don’t end up spending a fortune buying ingredients you don’t need.

Pantry” inventory brings peace of mind appreciation and pre-planning that makes for less stress later.>

7. Perfect Time for Pie

There’s a reason we eat pie for Thanksgiving.” so many of our fall harvest fruits and vegetables are perfect to use as pie fillers. potatoes>, pumpkin,” and pears can all be used to make divine fall pies.>

Making pie used to seem like a big undertaking. Then, I discovered the “Southern way” of doing it. When you harvest your fruits and veggies, you make a large batch of pie” filling to can>. Then, whenever you want to make a fresh pie, all you do is roll out a crust, pour in a can of filling, and bake.

Now that’s what I call an easy bake pie!

8. Make Potpourri

Let’s face it, just a short while from now, many of us are going to be spending most of our time indoors” hiding from the cold.>

Now, while the weather is still good, dry” your herbs>, apple” slices>, and orange peels. Pick the last lavender buds off your plants as you” cut them back> for winter. And otherwise, gather the materials you need to make your potpourri” to your own tastes.>

Put your blends in pouches to tuck under pillows to release calming fragrances as you sleep. Put it in a canister with holes to shake and release those aromas in the restroom. Set some aside to simmer on frigid days.

Making your own potpourri” is almost as pleasurable using it>

9. Make Leaf Crafts

I know you’ve been eyeing all those fall leaf” craft ideas> in magazines and online. Most of them only take a few minutes. They are an excellent way to bring the outdoors in and enhance the beauty of your homestead.

We have a lot of fall birthdays in my family. Making leaf print cards using craft paint and inexpensive card stock is an easy way to celebrate without breaking the bank!

10. Make Paper

Most people don’t know how simple it is to make” your own paper> using organic matter scavenged from around the homestead. Surprising things like dryer lint, crushed leaves, dried” flowers>, and more can all add beauty and texture to help you upcycle all that junk mail that invades your homestead.

You can then use this paper to mount your leaf art, make your holiday cards, or decorate” your fall dinner table>. Or, you can use it to make biodegradable seed trays to save money on your winter seed starts.

Homemade paper is an incredibly simple way to turn trash into treasure on the homestead.

Fall is a beautiful time to focus on the cycles of nature. Connecting with natural elements like fire and water can help ground you.

Getting back to the basics like enjoying hot beverages and freshly baked pies invites you back in time when the pace of life was slower. Giving your creative side freedom to use the vibrant colors of fall and the natural process of decay and recycling” to make beauty adds meaning.>

Having the confidence to try new experiences, providing your family with nourishing” homemade food>, and embracing change make you a resilient homesteader. These ten fall homestead activities aren’t just pleasurable; they’re soul-nourishing.

Take time to enjoy fall and embrace the changing seasons!

Once you place the probe or probes into the soil, the needle pointer moves across the numbered gauge on the dial’s screen to show the correct reading.

pH, Light, and Moisture Readings

pH levels are numbered from 3.5-8. 3.5-6 or 6.5, which means acidic soil and 7-8 which indicates alkaline soil. Moisture levels range between 1 to 10, so dry soil is 1-3, moist soil is 4-7, and wet soil is 8-10. These numbers will also have corresponding colors: red, green, and blue.

Sunlight temperature measurements are indicated in lux or lumens such as 0-2000 lux. 0-200 is low light, 200-500 is low light+, 500-1000 is normal light, and 1000-2000 is high levels of light.

Normal pH Scale

The perfect pH level for most plants is 6.2 to 7.2. Although there are some plants that do better with acidic soil, like blueberry plants or a blue hydrangea, most plants grow best in neutral soil.

Durability and Portability

Soil pH testers should be strong, durable, lightweight and compact so you can easily carry it around your garden. As the probes are sensitive instruments they are not designed for use in hard, rocky soil.

Accurate Measurements

A soil tester’s probes should be highly sensitive to detect any slight variations in the pH, moisture, or temperature of the soil.

Accurate data measurement readings will depend on a few factors. The probes should be placed deep into the soil about 2 to 4 inches, and close to the roots. If the needle pointer does not move or you get inaccurate readings, the soil is too dry or the probes are not placed close enough to the roots.

Most soil pH testers should be kept in the soil for 10 minutes in order to record stable and accurate readings.

Additional Important Tips for Using a Soil pH Tester

After you have used the soil pH tester, clean the probes thoroughly in distilled water.

Testers are also affected by temperature changes, so take your readings at roughly the same temperature every time to get the best results.
